A facilitated discussion on Bill Browder’s memoir of his time as an investment manager in Putin’s Russia and the ethical implications of this work for investment professionals.

In November 2009, Sergei Magnitsky was killed by police officers in a Moscow prison cell, an incident for which no charges have ever been levied. In this gripping memoir, Sergei’s friend and colleague Bill Browder sets out the multi-million dollar fraud that the killing helped to cover up, the corrupt environment in which these crimes took place and the challenges of acting ethically in an environment where these behaviours are the norm. In this session we will look to explore:

  • How investment professionals should manage operating in environments where poor ethical behaviours are widespread
  • Whether active investment can support such countries in developing a stronger ethical culture
  • What we can learn from the memoir that we can apply to our day to day practice
