Fusion is coming

Tuesday 24 May 2022 | 17:00 - 18:00 | Webinar

This session has been organised by CFA UK's Climate Change working group

In 1926 Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington showed that fusion energy was the engine that powered the stars. In his own words, “we sometimes dream that humankind will one day learn to release it and use it for our service. The store is well-nigh inexhaustible, if only it could be tapped.”

In the 96 years since his discovery Eddingtons dream has drawn ever closer to reality. Driven by cutting edge science and engineering, renewed public drive and commitment, and a growing private sector of innovators, fusion is now entering the delivery era.

In this session Melanie Windridge and Nick Walkden will introduce the basics of fusion energy and explain why it is such an attractive clean energy source for the future. They will explore the latest developments in the global fusion landscape and discuss the important role of investment in the fusion sector as it drives towards the delivery of fusion electricity to the grid.

Where recordings are made, these are a member benefit that are accessed through the member-only platform, CFA UK Discover.
