The past low yield environment has been a considerable test to fixed income investors in general but especially to investors with asset-liability management mandates.

In this panel discussion, Shalin Bhagwan of DWS Group, Jens van Egmond, CFA, of BlackRock and Jeremy Rideau, CFA of SSGA  will discuss those challenges and the possible strategies to address them.

This session will discuss;

  • The types of issues facing pension funds and insurers
  • The merits and drawbacks of various strategies available to meet duration and returns objectives concomitantly
  • Regional differences 
  • The role of ESG
  • The re-risking vs. de-risking debate

Speakers

Jens van Egmond, CFA, Lead LDI Client Portfolio Manager, BlackRock

Jens van Egmond, CFA, is Lead LDI Client Portfolio Manager Europe at BlackRock. In addition, Jens is chair of the investment committee and trustee of sportfondsen pension fund in the Netherlands.

Within the CFA society VBA Netherlands, he chairs the committee for the distribution of the VBA reserves

Shalin Bhagwan, Managing Director Head of Pensions Advisory and EMEA Consultants, DWS

Shalin Bhagwan joined DWS in 2018 and leads the UK Pensions business. His asset management experience includes the management of liability driven investment strategies for pension funds and insurers across fixed income, derivatives as well as listed and private credit.

He has managed these strategies for asset owners in the UK, USA and South Africa and has 30 years of experience in pensions and asset management. Prior to DWS he worked for Legal & General Investment Management, AXA Investment Managers, FirstRand Bank, Mercer and Aon.

Shalin is a fellow of the faculty of actuaries and holds an honours degree in statistics and actuarial science from the University of Cape Town. He is also an advisory board member for the city of London’s taskforce on socio-economic diversity.

Jeremy Rideau, CFA, EMEA Head of LDI, SSGA

Jeremy Rideau, CFA, leads a team of fund managers responsible for LDI and derivatives solutions on behalf of institutional investors. Prior to joining SSGA, he was Head of Solutions Fund Management at Legal & General Investment Management, where he lead a team of fund managers specialised in LDI and outcome oriented solutions for defined benefit, defined contribution and insurance clients.

Jeremy has a BSc and Masters in economics and management, and MSc in mathematical finance
